Kieran Mulvaney – the face of HBO Boxing News fight week updates, co-host of the HBO Boxing Podcast, and contributor to the Inside HBO Boxing blog – earned first place in the category of Boxing Event Coverage in the BWAA's annual Bernie Awards. Mulvaney won for his piece "Kovalev Brings Down Curtain on Hopkins’ Lengthy Reign" on Inside HBO Boxing last November. The article compared the slow decay of boxing mainstays Atlantic City and Bernard Hopkins, and can be read here.
Mulvaney also received an honorable mention in the category of Boxing Feature (over 1,500 words) for his Boxing News story on the fighter-turned-murderer Edwin Valero. HBO Boxing Podcast co-host Eric Raskin earned a pair of third place awards, in the category of Event Coverage for his Grantland article on Canelo Alvarez, as well as in Boxing Investigative Reporting for his oral history of Tyson-Douglas in Playboy.
The winners of the BWAA writing awards, as well as those for boxing photography, will be recognized at the 90th annual BWAA Awards Dinner, which will be held April 24 at Capitale in New York City. For more information, visit the BWAA website.
